The World at Your Fingertips
See it in Crossroads Gallery
October 7, 2017 through June 10, 2018
Never before have we had the power to access the world’s communications, information, and entertainment from anywhere on the planet like we do now.
When you pick up your smartphone, the world is in your hands. This remarkable device represents a history of technologies that have been incorporated into one instrument. Using artifacts from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, the Bartow History Museum, the Computer Museum of America, other museums, and private collections, this exhibit traces the evolution of everyday technologies such as telephones, cameras, televisions, radios, music players, clocks, maps, and many other tools. The exhibit will show how these technologies evolved from innovations, to commercial applications, to consumer goods for families, to devices for personal use, all now incorporated into one portable instrument personalized by each individual.
Supported in part by the Smithsonian’s Office of the Assistant Secretary for Education and Access.
