Ask the Expert: The Atlas Telescope Project: The First Step in Planetary Defense
with Dr. Larry Denneau
An Online Event
Wednesday, November 9, 2022
A monthly online VIRTUAL event where you can quiz our knowledgeable experts.
Is a catastrophic asteroid strike in our future? Astronomers think it is possible, since thousands of near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) have been identified. Detection of NEAs is the first step to defending against them. One of the NEAs that are 140 meters and larger in size so we can develop projects to deflect them if needed. Dr. Larry Denneau, astronomer at University of Hawaii, is a co-Principal Investigator of the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS), an all-sky robotic survey funded by NASA to search for hazardous asteroids. Learn about the challenges of funding, building, and operating telescopes for planetary defense and the difficulty of processing the large amount of data to make discoveries that could one day save us from a catastrophic event for our civilization.
This event will be LIVE on Facebook.
