BUGS! Insects vs. Arachnids

10 AM to 12:30 PM (check-in begins at 9:30)

Registration for this program closes at noon on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 or when the program reaches maximum capacity.

Come experience the fun and exciting world of bugs! During your visit, all scouts will embark on their “Outdoor STEM Journey – Think like a Citizen Scientist”. Brownies will complete 4 steps towards their Bug Badge. This workshop is full of scientific fun and, as part of your program, you will also explore the Collins Family My Big Backyard gallery.

Program will consist of 4 rotations of 30 minutes each.
Theatre:
a. Introduction to living and non-living things and scouts will learn what body parts make up an insect.
  • Daisies: Journey Part 1, 2, & 3
  • Brownies: Journey Part 1 & 2
Lab 3:
a. Scouts will learn the difference between an insect and an arachnid. They will hold and inspect various varieties of both. At end of lab, the scouts will make their own spider from clothes pins, chenille stems and googly eyes and take these home with them.
  • Daisies: Journey Part 1, 2, 4 & 5
  • Brownies: Journey Part 1, 2, 3 & 4
a. Scouts will have the opportunity to match the life cycle of various insects and explore other interactive exhibits of the gallery.

b. My Big Backyard Giant Tree – Scouts will go into the Big Tree within My Big Backyard gallery and learn all about the life of a honey bee including the roles of the Queen, worker and drone bees.
  • Daisies: Journey Part 3
  • Brownies: Journey Part 1 and Step 4 & 5  Bug Badge
All groups will finish in the museum Store where they can purchase items from their visit as well as additional Tellus patches (if available in stock).
