SPRING BREAK SCIENCE ESCAPE

10 AM – 5 PM

Members: FREE
Non-Members: Regular Admission

What do you want to be when you grow up?

Join us to explore different science careers each weekday during Spring Break! Come dressed as a scientist for fun photo ops!

• Meet science career professionals, 1 – 4 PM

• Enjoy themed activities, 10 AM – 4 PM

• Watch science videos in the Theater, 10 AM – 5 PM

• Come dressed as a scientist for each day’s theme! (Please keep costumes G-rated as this is a family-friendly event.)

• NASA Subject Matter Expert, Dr. Robert Zellum (live webcast in the Theater at 1 PM)

• NASA Subject Matter Expert, Dr. Vanessa Bailey (live webcast in the Theater at 3 PM)

• Tellus Science Museum Astronomer David Dundee

• Georgia Highlands College Physicist Mark Pergram

ACTIVITIES: 10 AM - 4 PM*

*Unless otherwise noted.

• Visit the Observatory 11 AM – 4 PM and look for sunspots and prominences (weather permitting).

• Come and design your own solar bead necklace to prepare for the sunny days of summer just ahead. UV light turns these special beads into an array of fun colors.

• Make and decorate a cardboard telescope that you can use to locate exoplanets in our re-creation of their orbits.

• Make an exoplanet rotary chart.

• Join in a human interactive mapping of the rotations of the exoplanets in the Trappist 1 system at 10:30 AM, 11:30 AM, NOON, 12:30 PM, 1:30 PM, 2:00 PM, 2:30 PM, and 3:30 PM in the Great Hall.

• Climb into a mini space capsule (for little kids only).

IN THE THEATER: 10 AM - 5 PM

• 10 AM – Eat Like an Astronaut + Smithsonian Science How: Meteorites and Spacecraft Missions

• 11 AM – Live NASA Science Matter Expert, Dr. Tiffany Kataria is an atmospheric climate modeler who interprets data from ground- and space-based observatories, like Hubble and Spitzer, and determines the weather processes that are happening on exoplanets.

• NOON – Eat Like an Astronaut + Smithsonian Science How: Meteorites and Spacecraft Missions

• 1 PM – Live NASA Science Matter Expert, Dr. Robert Zellum is working on ground- and space-based observations of the atmospheres of exoplanets.

• 2 PM – Eat Like an Astronaut + Smithsonian Science How: Meteorites and Spacecraft Missions

• 3 PM – Live NASA Science Matter Expert, Dr. Vanessa Bailey works on direct imaging, where she blocks out the light of the host star to resolve the light of the planet itself. She is also on the Project Science Team for WFIRST, a mission being launched by NASA within the next decade.

• 4 PM – Eat Like an Astronaut + Smithsonian Science How: Meteorites and Spacecraft Missions
