it's a total eclipse of the moon
Make plans to join us at Tellus and experience a total lunar eclipse.
The Museum and Observatory will open (weather permitting) at 1 AM as we prepare for the eclipse to begin at 1:09 AM when the Moon begins its trek into Earth’s shadow. The Moon will be fully eclipsed for one hour and five minutes starting at 2:26 AM, reaching maximum darkness at 2:58 AM. Along with our 20″ telescope, small telescopes will be set up for viewing.
We will also have a live view of the eclipse’s progression streaming from our telescope into the Theater.

LUNAR ECLIPSE FACTS
- A total lunar eclipse can only happen at full Moon when the Moon, Earth, and Sun are exactly lined up. The Earth gets in the way and blocks light from the Sun.
- At maximum eclipse, you can still see the Moon with the naked eye. This is because our atmosphere refracts some of the blocked sunlight around the Earth. Longer wavelengths of light, like red light, refract the best, so the moon will turn a deep red color. The shade of red varies by the amount of dust and clouds around the Earth that night.
