Earth’s dynamic surface has created a varied and beautiful landscape, but it also creates disasters that harm human life and livelihood. These disasters challenge scientists to discover why they occur and how to predict them. The greater warning we have, the better we can prepare. In this exhibit you will find out about hurricanes and volcanoes, make a tornado, create an earthquake, and see a tsunami in action. You will also learn about how to prepare to keep your family safe in the face of disaster.

FUN FACTS

  • Most of the tornadoes in the world happen in the United States.
  • Georgia is in the top five states most at risk for billion-dollar climate disasters.
  • Over 88% of all US counties declared a natural disaster between 2013 and 2023.
  • The largest earthquake ever recorded happened in May 1960 off the coast of southern Chile.
  • Most earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur within the Ring of Fire, a region that circles the Pacific Ocean.
  • About 40% of all hurricanes that have hit the United States struck Florida.
