
PART-TIME GUEST SERVICES, SECURITY OFFICER
SUMMARY: Regulate access to the museum and monitor visitor activities within and on grounds.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Assist in the daily operation of physical security controls.
- Assist in development of security plans for the protection of the Museum collection, exhibits, guests and staff.
- Pursue and complete projects necessary to ensure the safety of persons and the security of museum property.
- Patrol designated areas to check for vandalism, fire and/or theft, burned out lights and mechanical issues.
- Monitor the museum via security room.
- Rotation of all galleries, Café, Store, Orientation Theatre, Great Hall, Labs, Gem Panning, Fossil Dig, Admin., Outdoor Facilities, Outdoor Exhibits, Parking, etc.
- Watch for food and drinks in the museum, children running, guests touching exhibits.
- Be aware of the Café needs when there is heavy attendance and additional banquet room needs.
- Be able to assist with training of part-tine security.
- Be able to assist in the development of security plans for the protection of the collection, guests and staff.
- Assist in helping with school groups in areas of entering the building via front door, the loading dock doorway, and utilizing the banquet rooms for lunch during days of bad weather.
- Watch for picnicking in unauthorized areas in and outside of the museum.
- Provide assistance to museum patrons by answering questions and giving directions.
- Adapt to a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holiday work.
- Report when lights are out in galleries and replace them when directed to do so.
- Assist other departments in the museum when needed, including set up for special events.
- Be aware of times when alcohol is being served in the museum and watch for any possible problems; must complete TIPS training class.
- Be aware of all emergency procedures, must have CPR training.
- Report to the Museum when called in case of emergency.
- Understand the mission and goals of the museum, maintain building and collection security, maintain building cleanliness, and project a warm and friendly attitude toward guests and fellow staff.
- Be responsible for ensuring high standards of professionalism in all areas of responsibility.
- Perform other tasks and projects as requested by supervisor.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: High School Diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written; excellent human relations skills; and the ability to perform well under pressure are required. Two years security experience and/or two years public contact experience is preferred. Position requires varying work schedules that includes days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
CERTIFICATES, LISCENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Valid Driver’s license, any professional certificates or trade licenses are a plus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Museum environment with extensive work in maintenance and/or outdoor areas of the building under all types of weather conditions. Non-standard hours will apply depending on varying shifts scheduled Monday through Sunday. Must be available to be on call for emergencies at all times. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and use all limbs simultaneously. Must be able to stand or sit and walk for long periods of time.
