The museum accepts objects and written materials that fall within the collections scope.
No. The museum is not allowed to assign values to objects that are donated due to museum policy and IRS regulations. If you would like to have an appraisal done, you can contact the American Society of Appraisers, the Association of Appraisers, or the International Society of Appraisers for a referral.
The museum cannot guarantee that your donation will be on display. Depending on the museum’s needs, items from the collection can be designated for exhibits or used in research or educational activities. Whether on display or in storage, the object will be kept in accordance with best museum practices.
Maybe. Since Tellus is a program of Georgia Museums, Inc. a 501(c)(3), your donation may be tax deductible depending on your tax situation. Please contact your tax advisor or a tax professional for specific information relating to your situation.
No, you must first send us an email or fill out the collections donation form.
Once the object has been accessioned, the museum cannot return it to the donor. By signing the deed of gift, the donor has transferred all rights to the museum.
To begin the donation process, you will need to fill out the collections donation form and return it either by email, fax, or mail. If the museum decides to accept your object, you will receive a temporary receipt once the museum receives your donation. If it is accepted into the collection, you will then receive a deed of gift to sign and return, completing the donation process. You will also receive written acknowledgement of your donation.
Once you have submitted your collections donation form, you will typically hear from a member of the curatorial staff within a week. Once your donation is under consideration for inclusion into the collection, it may take up to three months for the final decision to be made, depending on when the Collections Committee meets. If your donation is accepted, you will then receive a Deed of Gift to sign and return, completing the process.
